hey,

To be honest i was looking for the How to Prime the canvas...
I thought Making a frame was a pretty straight forward thing...
Came across your tutorial and I so realised its an art itself,
little details here and there, =)
THANKS for all! =)

In case you haven't found anything, the way I prime a canvas (raw self-stretched canvas or store-bought canvas) is to use latex white house paint from the hardware store. I used to use "guesso", but it's too expensive compared to "barn & fence" paint which does the same thing.

I paint the canvas complete as if it were to be a white canvas and let it dry. Then sand it lightly by hand and repeat the process two more times. Regarding the sanding, I just use a 5"x8" (10x17.5cm)100-grain paper folded in half. I rub the sand paper across the dried surface lightly and then use a dry brush with soft bristles (a house paint brush is fine) to remove any dust. Some people say this many coats of primer is only necessary for oil painting, but I prefer it even for acrylics. Store-purchased canvases say they arrive pre-guessoed and they are (usually twice), but I like my canvases to be smoother, so that why I re-guesso/prime them three times.

Good luck,
Shad
